Similar to the Floppy disk, but
using rigid "hard" disks coated with a magnetic layer. Much higher
density of data storage and faster reading and writing of data. Can be
susceptible to shock (drop) damage. More expensive units built to be
more rugged and less susceptible to shock damage are available.
Typically hard disk drives are located inside computers. In recent
times portable hard disk drives are now readily available and can be
plugged into a data jack on the computer (USB, ESATA, FIREWIRE).
